EMED Project: Enhancing 4th Grade Math Education Through Distance Learning Technology

(They couldn't have come up with a longer title if they tried)
So what is EMED? It is a project that several HMK teachers have been working on for a year and a half: Carrie McKay, Sarah Hamingson, and Linda Grawet. Lots of learning for us. Lots of work. And a lot of amazing podcasts to use with our projectors. This project is based in the 4th grade math core but is applicable and useful for other grades. Take a look!

Places to Find Free E-books

Hey! Did you get a new E-Book Reader for the Holidays? While e-books are cheaper than regular books, free is even better. If you're not looking for something on  the New York Times Bestseller List, you should be able to find some great books to download here.
The first place to look is in the free ebook collection on Amazon.com. There you will find titles (some promotional, some public domain) made free by Amazon as well as links to Project Gutenberg, Open Library, Many Books, and the Internet Archive. All four of those places offer free downloads.
Some other places where you can find free ebooks are the Google eBookstore and Feed Books.

Happy Reading!

Grant for Pets in the Classroom

Pet Care Trust is sponsoring a program to help teachers support pets in the classroom through direct, no-hassle grants. You can obtain a grant or coupon for the purchase of new pets, pet environments or pet food and supplies for existing classroom pets.
Pets in the Classroom grants are offered to Kindergarten through Sixth grade classes only in both public and private schools.
Grants or coupons will be distributed in the amounts of $50, $100 or $150.

Grant money may not be spent for overhead, administration or for any other purpose than to purchase new pets, pet environments or pet food and supplies for existing classroom pets.
Only one grant per teacher is permitted. Teachers may re-apply for grant money each fall.
You can find out more about this grant and apply at Pets in The Classroom's website.
